Courage
K-3 are working on Courage. As an extension to our Growth Mindset discussions, we are reminded that "we can do hard things!" We have been exploring the strategies we use to push ourselves when things seem hard or scary. Kindergarten read Jabari Jumps and we talked about the strategies Jabari used to learn a new skill that seemed daunting. First grade met Howard B. Wigglebottom and talked about the difference in real fears and imaginary fears in our head. Real fears can keep us safe from things that could really harm us. Second grade read Thunder Cake and discussed the things we tell ourselves when something seems difficult. And third grade read If I Never Forever Endeavor and we talked about what we miss out on if we aren't willing to try.
We added a flashlight to our tool box to remind ourselves that things seem scary when we don't know what to expect, but if we at least try, it is like shining a light. It gets easier because now we know what things look and feel like.
