Courageous People

In February, we are working on Courage. As an extension to our Growth Mindset discussions, we are reminded that "we can do hard things!" We have been exploring the strategies we use to push ourselves when things seem hard or scary. Kindergarten will read Jabari Jumps and talk about the strategies Jabari used to learn a new skill that seemed daunting. First grade will meet Howard B. Wigglebottom and talk about the difference in real fears and imaginary fears in our head. Real fears can keep us safe from things that could really harm us. Second grade will read Thunder Cake and discuss the things we tell ourselves when something seems difficult. And third grade will read If I Never Forever Endeavor and talk about what we miss out on if we aren't willing to try. In 4 & 5 we will discuss when we know what the right thing to do is, but it feels hard.

We added a flashlight to our tool box to remind ourselves that things seem scary when we don't know what to expect, but if we at least try, it is like shining a light. It gets easier because now we know what things look and feel like.
