Inclusion

In January, we’ll focus on Inclusion. Specifically, we’ll talk about how we respect each other by honoring each other for who we are. Our world is constantly changing, and, as it becomes more diverse and interconnected, children need to understand that all people are unique; they have varying abilities, beliefs, and traditions; and they are important as individuals. It is natural to notice differences. We've talked about how these are opportunities to learn about each other. But also how for every difference we can also find something in common if we talk and listen. Making sure we include everyone ensures the opportunity to have these conversations and also ensures everyone feels welcome!

In Kindergarten we read Same Difference and explore some of the things that are both the same and different about classmates. In first grade we read Strictly, No Elephants and talk about what we might lose out on if we only include certain people. In second grade we read the Name Jar and think about the story of our names. We discuss how we all have a story that represents our individual culture. In third grade the Sandwich Swap reminds us that things that seem different might not be appealing at first glance, but if we take the time to learn, we might discover something about ourselves! And in 4 & 5, discussions around Where Oliver Fits and the Invisible Boy will explore how we all want to find the place where we fit and how our actions can help or hinder that for ourselves and others.

I’ll share two tools in my toolbox this time. The mirror reminds us to celebrate all the unique things that make each of us who we are. The window reminds us to notice others and respect all the unique things that make them who they are.
